Chinese hackers launch PRISM scare campaign

01 July 2016

Brandon Dixon of the 9bplus blog said he came across an email uploaded to VirusTotal entitled "CIA's Prism Watchlist".

The intended recipient of the message was a Yahoo account associated with the Regional Tibet Youth Congress in Mundgod, India, he added. The sender address was apparently faked to approximate "Jill Kelley" - the woman whose complaints of harassment prompted the investigation which led to the resignation of former CIA boss David Petraeus.

The Word doc attached was named "Monitored List 1.doc", containing malware designed to exploit the same vulnerability (CVE-2012-0158) favoured by the NetTraveler gang, Dixon wrote.

"It's funny to note that these actors are keeping up with their same techniques and infrastructure (not all of it) despite being 100 per cent outed," he added. "Again, this sort of behaviour shows poor operational security or a complete lack of care."

The NetTraveler attacks were first brought to light by Kaspersky Lab earlier this month, when researchers at the AV vendor revealed that the campaign had successfully compromised more than 350 high profile victims in 40 countries, with the malware in question having been active since 2004.

Key targets included embassies, oil and gas corporations, research institutes, military contractors and governments.

Tibetan and Uyghur activists were also among those targeted by the group of 50-odd individuals - usually a tell-tale sign of Chinese involvement.

Kaspersky added that most members were native Chinese speakers. ®

VIRUS / RANSOM-WARE TROJAN WARNING - Read Urgently

02 April 2014

Dear all LaneSystems clients and friends,

A particularly nasty Ransom-ware Trojan called CryptoLocker which first surfaced in September 2013 has become a serious threat once again.

The ransom-ware is entering peoples email inbox's appearing to be a scanned fax. The attachment is a zipped folder and if opened it will cause serious and potentially unrecoverable damage to your IT system and data.

The email is entering inbox's with subject headers such as:

  • New Fax - 3

  • Scanned Fax

  • Fax@your domain

The safest option is that if you receive any emails contain the word FAX in the subject header with a zip file attached please do NOT open it.

The ransom-ware is activated by the user when they click to open the attachment and in some flavour a countdown timer or Red X will appear on the screen with a message saying your data is being encrypted. You will then be presented with the option to pay a ransom to get your data back; even if you pay the ransom your data will not be decrypted!

This ransom-ware is a real threat and if your system becomes infected there is no way to decrypt your files and you will lose everything unless a backup has been made!

As the ransom-ware is arriving by email we strongly urge you to be aware of your emails and be careful when opening attachments if they are not from a source you regularly receiving emails with attachments from.

We urge all users to be incredibly vigilant when opening all attachments and if your Anti-Virus protection says that an email or the attachment may include malicious items giving you the option to open it or not please do not open it!

VIRUS / RANSOMWARE TROJAN WARNING

10 January 2014

Dear all LaneSystems clients and friends,

A particularly nasty Ransomware Trojan called CryptoLocker which first surfaced in September 2013 has become a serious threat once again.

The Trojan is sent out appearing as a legitimate email with an attachment but the attachment holds the ransomware/malware code.

The Trojan is activated by the user when they click to open the attachment and in some flavour a countdown timer will appear, it will start counting down and state your files (PC/Laptop & Server) will be encrypted unless a ransom is paid to decrypt the user's files. Even if you pay the ransom your files will not be decrypted!

This Trojan is a real threat and if your system becomes infected there is no way to decrypt your files and you will lose everything unless a backup has been made!

As the Trojan is arriving by email we strongly urge you to be aware of your emails and be careful when opening attachments if they are not from a source you regularly receiving emails with attachments from.

The current variation of this Trojan appears to be arriving in user's inboxes as the following emails:

• Missed delivery update
• Bank or Payroll reference
• A voicemail message
• Scanned image from a printer

We urge all users to be incredibly vigilant when opening all attachments and if your Anti-Virus protection says that an email or the attachment may include malicious items giving you the option to open it or not please do not open it!

Kind Regards,
LaneSystems

End of Windows XP support

11 November 2013

On the 8th April 2014 Microsoft is to end its support for the Windows XP operating system.

This much loved operating system has been in operation for over 12 years and is applauded by many but with the support ending it will leave the software open to exploitation.

Due to this now is the time to act and discuss the rolling out a mass upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 depending on your requirements.

LaneSystems can help any business still operating on Windows XP operating systems to migrate their IT infrastructure to the newer operating systems.

To speak with one of our team call 01740623582 or email enquirires@lanesytems.co.uk for more information.
