This month we would like to explain the term 'phishing' and how it can pose a serious security risk to the individual.

The term 'phishing' is defined as a criminally fraudulent attempt to steal your personal information such as usernames, passwords and bank account details (all card types). This is usually done through the use of cleverly developed emails.

The emails are designed to look like they are coming from trustworthy sources but in fact are attempts by internet criminals to get a hold of your details.
Many of the emails or messages will come from popular websites such as social media sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators hoping to lure the unsuspecting public in to freely handing over their personal details which can be used by internet criminals.

As mentioned, email is the main source internet criminals will try to 'phish' for your details but the use of instant messaging is also high and both look identical to a legitimate email or instant message.

An important item to remember is that internet criminals, in order to 'phish' your details need to take you to a website where you would enter your details.

'Phishing' emails or messages will almost always tell you to click a link that takes you to a site where your personal information is requested. Please remember that no legitimate organisation would ever request this information of you via email or via their website from an emailed link.

If you do receive any emails and are unsure about it please do one of these three items:

1. Ignore the email as they will often enter your 'junk' folder and should just be left there.
2. Contact the organisation who sent the email, i.e. if it is an email from your bank contact your bank to ask about the email.
3. If you are still unsure after reviewing the above two point contact LaneSystems and we will be happy to give advice.

We hope this tip has brought awareness of the 'phishing' threat and will aid you in keeping your personal information safe when online.
